As our adventures take us to more and more cool places we occasionally have to stop and eat. I’ve realized that there some very unexpectedly kid friendly restaurants in Kansas City!
Chez Elle Creperie and Coffeehouse
1713 Summit Street
Kansas City, MO 64108
Chez Elle is a casual French-themed coffeehouse that serves sweet & savory crepes inside an old neighborhood theater. My first observation was the unconventional seating arrangements. On warmer days outdoor tables are ideal. If your child’s loud crying or, in my case, laughing often result in rude stares and not so discreet sighs of disgust, fear not. Enjoy the beauty of the Westside while feasting away. Once the days get colder, my eyes are on the prize of the sofa and chairs by the side entrance. Does your child commonly get a case of the wiggles? Let them lounge on the sofa. Chez Elle has also brought game night to the restaurant. A bookshelf of board games, coloring books, crayons, and children’s stories have kept Lily entertained through long Saturday and Sunday morning brunches. Whoever thought of it must know that chic urban city dwellers wish to dine at more sophisticated eateries than Chuck E. Cheese.
Char Bar – Smoked Meats & Amusements
4050 Pennsylvania Avenue, #150
Kansas City, MO 64111
Char Bar is BBQ & Southern eats with a modern twist, plus mason-jar cocktails, in a big space with a retro vibe. The team behind Char Bar describe it as a new kind of playground where carnivores, herbivores and locavores can co-mingle peacefully. Luckily that playground also includes toys that any child would like. The Beer Garden has four game areas to make a great BBQ filled family fun day or night out. Cornhole is free. Ping Pong is $10 per 30 minute session. Bocce Ball is $20 per hour. Classic Croquet is $20 or $5 per person per hour.
444 Ward Parkway
Kansas City, MO 64112
Kona Grill has one of the best happy hour in Kansas City! The food is delicious and the staff has excellent customer service. Not too long along I had the pleasure of dining there for a friend’s birthday lunch. Just so happened that Lily came along with me. Since we were there for a birthday lunch I thought nothing of bringing her. However, a young child in the bar area of any restaurant would usually be cause for a quiet panic from servers and diners alike. Not the case at Kona Grill. Our servers were wonderfully sweet and very accommodating. Read about that dining experience HERE.
Spin! Neapolitan Pizza
2450 Grand Boulevard
Kansas City, MO 64108
An honorable mention goes to Spin! Pizza at Crown Center. While it is without the toys and tricks of the aforementioned establishments, it still has a vibe that does well with bringing your kids to eat there. The 4-7 pm happy hour makes Spin! one of the more wallet friendly dinner choices for eating out in Kansas City. Lily loves the unique seasonal ingredients that she can add to her pizza. If your child would balk at the sight of anything green or brown or orange or purple on their pizza, don’t worry. Children can get the Bambini kids meal with cheese or pepperoni pizza or mac & cheese with a drink (soda, milk, or juice) and a mini gelato.
